Working with layer upon layer, I expose things hidden by scraping top layers off, or melt layers together by using fire. Even though the dress is disembodied, it seems to move in a space of it’s own. A dress is worn not only to protect the wearer from the universe, but it often defines individuality. The many layers are symbolic of both the psychological and the physical layers today’s women carry with them.</span></span></div>

<h2 align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">CONSISTENCY</span></h2>
<h2 align="center">
</h2>
<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mHEU5ehYeeQ/T848rUS26gI/AAAAAAAAAq8/71cMv9zLV0I/s1600/cartoon-consistent.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" fba="true" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mHEU5ehYeeQ/T848rUS26gI/AAAAAAAAAq8/71cMv9zLV0I/s320/cartoon-consistent.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">This Tuesday's topic is consistency. Consistency is defined by Dictionary.com as "the steadfast adherence to the same principles". I know, I know - it could be confused as being boring, being stuck, not growing etc. These two quotes illustrate this:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">"A foolish consistency is the hobgobblin of small minds." Emerson</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">"Consistency is the last refuge of the imagination." Oscar Wilde</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">But, when it comes to your both making and marketing your artwork, you should be exercising consistency of some sort.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Let's start with your art - - if you are at the point where you want to get your work out there, you have reached the point where you must have a consistent body of work, meaning the artwork will be recognized as being by the same hand. Every gallery will tell you that. Working in a series is very important, so important that artist Lisa Call has begun teaching a very successful on-line class called <a href="http://lisacall.com/workshops/online-workshops/working-in-a-series/"><span style="color: red;">Working in a Series</span></a>. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Next up - your promotional pieces. There should be consistency within all of your material. You should use the same font on your cards, in your newsletter, etc. The banner on your blog, your newsletter and your facebook page should be the same. (OK - I'm in the midst of redesigning mine, and when completed within the week, all will have the same banner). </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IxCQlCfWIjg/T85ADzdfY5I/AAAAAAAAArI/eI0POuKgjas/s1600/delicious_consistency.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" fba="true" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IxCQlCfWIjg/T85ADzdfY5I/AAAAAAAAArI/eI0POuKgjas/s320/delicious_consistency.jpg" width="264" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And, last but not least, social media! Strive to blog consistently. That is why I began the Tuesdays Marketing Tips - to have a consistent schedule. I am striving to be on a regular schedule of posting the same day of the weeks, two times a week, but I continue writing when the mood strikes me. This is a work in progress. Another thing about blogging, consistently leave comments on other blogs - that is like leaving a calling card around the internet! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">If you have a newsletter, send it out with consistency also.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Right now, I'm researching and trying to learn more about blogging and facebook fan pages. I will share what I learn here. </span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have recently joined the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><a href="http://www.artbizcoach.com/conspiracy/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Artist Conpiracy</span></a> </span>headed by Alyson Stanfield, the <a href="http://www.artbizcoach.com/about/index.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Art Biz Coach</span></a>. We are encouraged to have goals on a monthly basis - and I've chosen to further break them down by week. To be more accountable, I have decided to share my goals monthly here. So here goes:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>JUNE GOALS</b></span><br />

<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to organize the CD's of my images and put them in files on my exterior hard drive. I have not done this in over a year, and Joel photographs my work as I complete it. To start this, I must clean the desktop off my computer.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When this is complete, I am going to get update my website. I have to update the exhibitions page too. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to re-organize my studio, and when done, I want to have photographs of me INSIDE my studio to use on both my blog and website.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I want to do a photoshopped banner that I can utilize on my fan page, my blog and my newsletter.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to update my mailing list for my newsletter.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to complete a submission that has been virtually completed for six weeks. The finishing is completing some marketing materials that must go with the submission.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I will blog a minimum of two times a week.</span></div>

<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to work out at least 3 hours this week - this will help me relax and sleep so I can be more productive.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Headline of the paper after the fateful crash</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Fifty years ago today, on June 3, 1962, the art community in Atlanta was forever changed. After a three week trip to Europe, members of the Atlanta Art Association were returning home to Atlanta on a chartered plane. The plane crashed on takeoff, killing all but two stewardesses. At the time, it was the worst single plane crash in history.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"It was the Titanic of our city. When it happened, it took a lot of leaders, important people at the time." says Ann Uhry Abrams, author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Explosion-Orly-Disaster-Transformed-Atlanta/dp/0972494308/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1338669607&sr=8-2-fkmr0">"<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Explosion at Orly, The Disaster that </span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Transformed Atlanta"</span>. The group included artists, civic leaders, heads of businesses, overall, an influential group. They had traveled to Europe partly for pleasure, but also to show the city had a commitment to culture.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Out of this grief, the citizens of Atlanta realized something needed to be done to memorialize the crash victims. They knew the tiny museum located in an old house needed to be improved. Ground was broken on the fourth anniversary of the crash for the Memorial Arts Center. It opened in 1968, and was the first arts center that housed both visual and performing arts in the same venue, which included the Atlanta College of Art (now part of <a href="http://www.scad.edu/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design</span></a>), <a href="http://www.atlantasymphony.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">The Atlanta</span> </a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Symphony Orchestra</span> and the <a href="http://www.high.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">High Museum of Art</span></a>. <a href="http://www.alliancetheatre.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">The Alliance Theatre</span> </a>was added in 1970, and in 2005 <a href="http://www.yawac.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Young Audiences </span></a>was added. This addition ensures the PreK-12 programs will serve more than one million children annually, the largest base of an arts center in the country.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was renamed the <a href="http://www.woodruffcenter.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Woodruff Arts Center</span> </a>in 1982 to honor the great benefactor, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_W._Woodruff"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Robert W.</span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Woodruff</span></a>, also known in Atlanta as Mr. Anonymous. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The French government donated <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_W._Woodruff"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Rodin's</span></a> "The Shade" to the High Museum in memory of the crash victims. It now stands outside with the names of all the victims surrounding it. <h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">THE ELEVATOR SPEECH</span></h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2-AXBV8CfW4/T7wo_IOzr0I/AAAAAAAAAmo/lErwRTJrs0s/s1600/images-2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2-AXBV8CfW4/T7wo_IOzr0I/AAAAAAAAAmo/lErwRTJrs0s/s1600/images-2.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has probably happened to you. You tell someone you are an artist, and inevitably you are asked, what do you do? "I um paint, many ah um different things, whatever strikes my mood at the - ah - time". You have lost your opportunity for a 30-60 second commercial about your work.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What is an elevator speech? It is when the opportunity is given to make a point in a timely manner in the time is takes for a normal elevator to ride from the top to the bottom floor.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is important for all artists to develop an elevator speech so you are not stumped the next time someone asks you about your art. It should be 30-60 seconds and it is your chance to tell who you are and describe your artwork SUCCINCTLY to the audience.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I must admit, I have gotten lazy about working on my "elevator speech". Thus, I have missed a few opportunities to connect with someone that is interested in my art. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is your chance to tell someone how your art is different, tell them what you are trying to convey, or what your goals are. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You can use this at gallery openings, networking events, or at the dog park when you casually mention you are an artist to someone. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here are some tips:</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Write is down and keep it to a few sentences. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Always identify yourself. </span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Talk directly to the listener</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practice your story until it sounds unrehearsed while you sound confident.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have different variations of the speech so you can adjust it for your audience.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> "Hi, my name is Vickie, I work with mixed media on canvas. Using acrylic paint and also collage and household items, like coffee, tea, alcohol, I create texture and layers. Lately I have been experimenting with fire, using a blow torch and actually burning gunpowder to create more texture". I'm still working on it!</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Don't miss your chance for a :30 to :60 commercial about your artwork.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you have a killer elevator speech? I'd like to see some good examples!</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I have always thought of the <a href="http://decaturartsfestival.com/festival-events/artists-market"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Decatur Art Festival </span></a> as the beginning of the summer! It does, after all, take place Memorial Day weekend wich the<u><span style="color: #cc0000;"> </span></u><a href="http://decaturartsfestival.com/festival-events/artwalk"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Decatur Art Walk </span></a> kicking the festivies off. Taking place on Friday, May 25 from 5-10P, many business in downtown <a href="http://www.decaturga.com/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Decatur</span></a> will feature artists. Because of my represention at <a href="http://www.theseengallery.com/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">The Seen Gallery</span></a>, I was invited to display my work at the <a href="http://www.cookswarehouse.com/"><span style="color: #cc0000;">Cook's Warehouse</span></a>, located on Ponce De Leon Avenue. In fact, the pieces featured above will be on display on Friday night.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Decatur has managed to keep it's small town atmosphere, while tapping into the sophistication of being part of a major metropolitan area as well as being a college town.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some facts about Decatur:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. Emory University, Columbia Theology School and Agnes Scott College are both located in Decatur</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. Decatur is older than Atlanta - founded in 1822</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. It was founded at the crossroad of two Native American trails.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4. When the Western and Atlantic railroad wanted to make Decatur the southernmost stop on their line, the citizens of Decatur said no, and Atlanta was founded 6.2 miles Southwest. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
5. And, most importantly, Decatur is my home!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, come out on Friday and enjoy a leisurely walk around the Decatur square, Be sure to stop into The Cook's Warehouse and say hello!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been reading ALOT of blogs by artists lately, and I find the most interesting ones are the ones where I learn a little about the person that is writing the blog - the ones that go beyond the actual artwork. I found a post called<u> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"><a href="http://www.robinjanefingher.com/8-random-things/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">8</span></a><a href="http://www.robinjanefingher.com/8-random-things/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"> Random Things About Me</span></a></span></u> written by<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"> <a href="http://www.robinjanefingher.com/about/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Robin Jane</span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Fingher</span></a> </span>that really gave me some insight into the person behind the artwork. I realize I have never really written about ME. So here goes!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. I am left-handed and proud of it! Left-handed people tend to be right brained. Knowing this, you can understand why I became curious when I kept seeing the popular book, <a href="http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=drawing+on+the+right+side+of+the+brain&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=6015482582427906124&sa=X&ei=9v6zT57lKYea9gTeooSNCQ&ved=0CKABEPMCMAQ#ps-sellers" style="color: red;">Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain</a>. A local art center offered a class with the same name, and the rest is history!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. I learned to play the piano at age five. My grandfather had a music store and was a piano tuner. My dad re-built pianos for a hobby. Many of my cousins (I have 34 first cousins) play an instrument or know how to tune a piano.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3. My family has a long history in Georgia - we go back over 200 years. This is unusual living in <a href="http://www.atlanta.net/50fun/" style="color: red;">Atlanta</a>, which is a city of transplants. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. I love to learn about the history of Atlanta. In fact, I used to give historical walking tours for the <a href="http://www.atlantapreservationcenter.com/index"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">Atlanta Preservation Center</span></a>. Among the tours I gave were of the<span class="Apple-style-span"> <span class="Apple-style-span"><a href="http://www.foxtheatre.org/" style="color: red; text-decoration: underline;">Fox Theater</a>, one of less than ten atmospheric theaters left in the United States.</span></span></span></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
5. I've taken tango lessons.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. I love love love to read. I read - on the average - two books a week. In fact, I read EVERY day.</div>
<div>
My favorite book is<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;"> </span><u><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Kill_a_Mockingbird" style="color: red;">To Kill a Mockingbird</a>,</u> in fact I named a dog after the character Scout!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Speaking of dogs, I can't imagine not having one. I have two dogs right now - Waylon and Ziggy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jJsbhSHOopI/T7QDVTra40I/AAAAAAAAAmQ/b3nAdQ_Q0zM/s1600/173501_1399961983_1961387_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jJsbhSHOopI/T7QDVTra40I/AAAAAAAAAmQ/b3nAdQ_Q0zM/s1600/173501_1399961983_1961387_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ziggy is currently the number one dog in his agility class (okay, it is a class of one!).<br />
<br />
8. I have had the same "day" job for over 23 years. I place "time" for advertising on both television and radio. <br />
<br />
9. My favorite food is salsa - I could eat it with anything.<br />
<br />
This is it for now - it is time to go paint!!!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">

<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large; font-weight: normal;">New Feature!</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-laSOuJATxNE/T6hjDntQC1I/AAAAAAAAAkQ/iym2_QNjCVk/s1600/images.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-laSOuJATxNE/T6hjDntQC1I/AAAAAAAAAkQ/iym2_QNjCVk/s1600/images.jpeg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span">What I hear the most from struggling artists is they want to "create" (insert dramatic movement here, we tend to be dramatic after all) and not spend their time marketing. I disagree - marketing comes in all shapes and sizes, from the way you define your art to the way your present yourself. </span><span class="Apple-style-span">As someone who has spent over 25 years in the world of advertising, I understand the value of advertising and public relations. It has, after all, paid bills my entire adult life. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What do I do in my day job? I place broadcast advertising (TV, cable, radio) for major clients (Home Depot, Kia, Hyundai, Trader Joe's to name a few) while digital advertising is butting it's head against the door. Advertising is a great indicator of the economy, so much so I could chart it based on layoffs and hirings. Rule of thumb, when the economy is good, advertisers spend money. Savvy advertisers know to spend money in a down economy, but they are few and far between.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Because advertising is an industry for the young, to stay on top of my game I decided professionally to become an authority on social media - more on that at a later post.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With that said, I had an "aha" moment and decided it was time to share some of my insights with fellow artists.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First of all - what is marketing? The American Marketing Association defined marketing in 2007 as "the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customs, clients, partners and society at large". Are you still not understanding the value of marketing?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16px;">First and foremost are the 4P's of marketing: PRODUCT (defining your product and your audience), PLACEMENT (where will your audience see it), PRICING (an on-going discussion for artists), and PRESENCE (the result of marketing, both advertising and public relations).</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 16px;"><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16px;">To make this artist friendly, I am going to write an on-going feature that will define many of these mysteries for you - and how it relates it back to your art-marketing. My mother insists she doesn't want anything. While I can always give her a plant or flowers, I feel I've overdone that over the years. A couple of years ago I tried getting her a gift certificate to a restaurant she likes to go to. Wouldn't you know - six months later while we were out, she wanted to go to that restaurant and then whipped out the gift certificate I had given her. I tried giving her a gift card to a grocery store, and I still don't know how that gift card landed back in my purse!</span><span class="Apple-style-span">I think most mom's like to get things handmade. But, if it is already too late to start on something of your own, or you aren't a artsy craftsy kind of person, I know of a place you can go! When WQXI-AM was sold, she decided to take a chance and pursue something she really loved, and thus </span><a href="http://insideout.myshopify.com/pages/about-us-1"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">InsideOut</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> was born!</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To say Atlanta is a festival town is an understatement. Beginning mid-April, there is virtually a festival somewhere within metro Atlanta every weekend through mid-November. On some weekends there might be as many as four or five festivals. The crowds are HUGE, the prices are high and parking is always a premium.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Every once in a while I see or read something that really gets under my skin and makes me want to learn more. This happened recently upon seeing a production of the play <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_(play)"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">RED</span></a> </span></b>in Atlanta, with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rothko"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Mark Rothko</span></b></a> in the center. This is not a review of the play (even though I thoroughly enjoyed it), but some of the things I learned from reading about both the play and Rothko.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">RED is a two person play set in the late 1950's when Rothko was painting his murals for the Four Seasons in New York. If you don't know this story, Rothko accepted a commission to paint a series of murals for the <a href="http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/the-four-seasons-restaurant/"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Four Season's Restaurant</span></strong></a>, located in the Seagrams Building on Park Avenue designed by<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Mies_van_der_Rohe"> <strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Mies Van Der Rohe</span></strong></a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Johnson"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Philip Johnson</span></strong></a>. Rothko completed 40 paintings, three series in dark red and brown and even altered his horizontal format to vertical to go with the columns, walls, and windows in the restaurant. After a trip to Europe and a visit to the restaurant, he abruptly changed his mind and returned the $35,000 (roughly two million dollars today) he'd been given for the paintings. He kept them in storage until 1968, and they now hang in the <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rothko"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Tate Modern</span></a> </span></b>in London, a museum in Tokyo, and the <a href="http://www.nga.gov/" style="color: #38761d; font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">National Gallery of Art </span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-weight: bold;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span">in Washington D.C.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He never fully explained this decision, but many felt after visiting the restaurant, he found it pretentious and not the best place to view his meditative paintings. He was quoted as saying they would end up in a space "where the richest bastards in New York will come and feed and show off" (told to a Harper's Bazaar editor).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The play was written by <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rothko"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">John Logan</span></a></b>, who also co-wrote The Gladiator, Rango, and most recently Hugo. After seeing the paintings at the Tate that were intended for the Four Seasons, Logan was inspired to pen the play. He was in London finishing up the screenplay for Sweeney Todd and found "they had a vibrancy, a severe and somber power to them".</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">During the play, Rothko quotes <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Nietzche</span></a> </span>and<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d; font-weight: bold;"> </span> <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigmund_Freud"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Freud</span></a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzsche"> </a></span></b> He talked about commercialism and how <strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Dali</span></strong> and<strong><span style="color: #38761d;"> </span></strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Picasso"><strong><span style="color: #38761d;">Picasso</span></strong></a> would sign menus to make money - even after he had accepted a $35,000 commission.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The play portrayed Rothko as a hard drinker, heavy smoker, and an intellectual with disdain for lesser minds, in short - an egomaniac. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The rectangles floating - often using a palette of red and brown and black - were meant to be seen in a contemplative environment, not on the walls of a restaurant where people went to see and be seen.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Rothko suffered from depression, and ended up committing suicide in 1970. Surprisingly, his suicide coincided to the day the murals arrived at the Tate Modern in London.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I admit to downloading the play and re-reading it later. I wondered how much of the dialogue came from Rothko's own writings - because his spirit was there. Some of the quotes I remembered and have read in reviews were:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Selling a painting is like sending a blind child into a room of razor blades" - which showed he had a vulnerable side. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"One day the black will swallow the red."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The murals are "a continuous narrative, each a new chapter".</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Painting is "10% putting on paint, 90% waiting".</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"You cannot be an artist until you are civilized. You cannot be civilized until you learn."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In reading about Rothko's paintings, the word repeated is "pulsates". As Rothko himself said:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"The fact that people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions...the people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when painting them. And if you say you are moved only by their color relationships then you miss the point."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">What have you seen or read lately that inspired you to learn more about the subject or person?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am amazed how wonderful this show ended up looking after it was hung. Having a store front window, along with great lighting (thanks Bill Bibb!) added to the drama of the work. I have to admit I am proud of the way it turned out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Seen Gallery is conveniently located on Church Street in Decatur, Georgia. There is ALOT of foot-trafffic along here - this area is a real foodie destination. The award winning <a href="http://cakesandalerestaurant.com/">Cakes And Ale</a> (recently winning a James Beard award, as well as awards from Food and Wine Magazine) and<a href="http://leonsfullservice.com/"> Leons Full Service</a> are loccated across the street.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The show will be up until the end of March, so make <a href="http://www.decaturga.com/">Decatur</a> your destination during the next month and stop in and see my solo show! </div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I just finished reading the autobiography about Peggy Guggenheim, and am currently reading a book about Pierre Matisse. In these books, and other bios I've read I found some some interesting, and often little known facts about some of more popular artists through the years, so I thought I'd list some of them.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Peggy Guggenheim accompanied John Cage to Japan in 1962. Their interpreter was Yoko Ono, who shared a room with Peggy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Monet won 100,000 francs with a state lottery ticket which made him financially independent.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Samuel Morse began as a painter before the Morse Code was born. He introduced the daguerreotype process of photography to the United States. He considered James Fenimore Cooper to be one of his best friends.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Picasso's midwife thought he was stillborn, until his uncle picked him up and blew air in his lungs. His first word was pencil (in Spanish, of course).</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in 1911, and Picasso was questioned about the theft with his friend the poet Apollinaire, who was briefly jailed.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Willem De Kooning's lawyer was Linda McCartney's father.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Elaine De Kooning taught art at the University of Georgia in the 1970's.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Rembrandt declared bankruptcy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ruth Kligman was the survivor of Jackson Pollack's car crash. She later lived for awhile with DeKooning.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After Rothko withdrew his murals from the Seagrams building in New York, he sent them to the Tate. The day they arrived at the Tate was the day Rothko committed suicide. (okay, so this one isn't so fun, but tragic)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lucien Freud had 14 known children by one wife and 12 mistresses.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Agnes Martin gave up painting for seven years, from 1967 - 1974.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Alexander Calder was married to the great niece of writer Henry James. His friends called him Sandy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Jackson Pollack was often referred to as Jack the Dripper.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you have any facts to add? I think little tidbits like this make these larger than life artists seem a little more human!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dVHN7ogK37Y/TzMSge9AfUI/AAAAAAAAAiE/Af8LxgsRO2k/s1600/DSCN0024_0578.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dVHN7ogK37Y/TzMSge9AfUI/AAAAAAAAAiE/Af8LxgsRO2k/s320/DSCN0024_0578.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sacred Spaces is the current exhibit at Georgia Perimeter College's Clarkston Location in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building. I really thought the work looked great in this environment. To give some background to this work - this is Lance's artist statement for this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"This series consists of ten 36" x 56" (approximately) pieces on paper. The images and marks on these mixed media pieces are connected (through the artist's mind) to spaces/places that have traditionally become associated with worship and/or are of pivotal importance to the world's religions. Only ten spaces are portrayed which implies that only some of the world's religions and traditions are expressed."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think it works very well. The paper is from a roll of watercolor paper and he taped the edges and put gromets in the top - a very effective way to present them. The ten places are:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Friends Meeting House - Houston, Texas</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chartres Cathedral, Chartres France</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pantheon, Rome</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Acropolis, Athens</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stonehenge, Great Britain</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mecca, Saudi Arabia</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ziggurate of Ur, Iraq</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
St. Peters Basilica, Vatican City</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was really drawn to St. Peters Basilica, as well as the Dome of the Rock. There is a reverence, as well as a rhythm about these pieces that are difficult to explain. I felt the work was personal and reflected Lance's spirituality. And the fact that Lance is an architect makes it more interesting to see his interpretations of these places.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0WFMhCg1sE/TzMUkIuo42I/AAAAAAAAAiM/Rx5ObsY48Os/s1600/DSCN0026_0580.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0WFMhCg1sE/TzMUkIuo42I/AAAAAAAAAiM/Rx5ObsY48Os/s320/DSCN0026_0580.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While these ten pieces make up the core of the show, it is interspersed with some of Lance's favorite works. Above you see him standing in front of his favorite piece in the show.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The show will be up through February 10th. I encourage you to check it out. AND, I hope Lance finds another places to display these pieces because they deserve to be seen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Lance's work can be seen at DK Gallery on the square of Marietta.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
February is usually a slow month in the world of art. My plans were to organize in January and February, update my website and set up a good inventory system - and then start a new series and experiment with new techniques. Also, January and February historically is my busiest time in the year for my day job - and I tend to work 50+ hours a week during this time, not leaving me much time for my art!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But something happened, and the week of February 6th has me attending FOUR events that will feature my artwork in and around Atlanta.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Starting with Monday February 6th, which is the opening of the 30th annual <a href="http://www.spotlightonart.com/">Spotlight on Art</a>, an invitational fundraiser for the Trinity School, located on Northside Drive near the Chattahoochee River. A weeklong event, it begins with the Opening Reception 6p-9p on Monday and going through Saturday. It features 350 artists - - all invited to be a part of this show. I will have three pieces on display here.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Song of the Moon<br />
24x36<br />
<br />
<br />
<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Up next, on Thursday February 9th. <a href="http://www.insideoutaccessories.com/">InsideOut Accessories </a>located in Vinings Jubilee will host an evening with the artists from 5-9p. This is an artisan boutique that features everything from jewelry, metal sculptures, glasswares and much more. This is a good destination to find that one of a kind Valentine's Day gift, as everything in the store is handmade by Georgia artists. In addition to what is usually on display in the store, I will have several small original paintings that would make a great Valentine's Day Gift, as small at 3"x3" to 24"x36".<br />

Now you have a place to call your own. But, do you want it to be like everybody else's? Even if it is just a room, an apartment, or a recently purchased house, don't you want your surrounding to reflect who you are? I don't know about you, but I don't want my surrounding to look like it came out of an Ikea catalog. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I've always surrounded myself with furniture and accessories that I felt were unique to me. <br />
<br />
Which brings me to the <b>first reason</b> to buy original art - you are purchasing something that is unique to you, it is a one of a kind piece. It is as unique as you are - there is not another one exactly like it in the world, just like you are one of a kind!<br />
<br />
The remainder of the reasons are in no particular order.<br />
<br />
You have found something that gives you pleasure, it moves you aesthetically, or moves you on a sensory level. This gives you a personal connection to the pieces, a connection only you have with it!<br />
<br />
You also are supporting an artist and allowing the artist to continue to create. And, you are probably supporting a small business owner. If you are buying from a local artist, or from a local gallery, you are supporting the local economy.<br />
<br />
Don't be afraid to buy original art. It doesn't have to be as difficult or as expensive as many people believe it to be. Most galleries are happy to talk to you about their pieces, and there are many places that carry small pieces that aren't that expensive. I myself have ornament sized paintings that I sale for under $50, and many purchasers have returned to purchase larger pieces. And, if you do buy an original piece from a gallery, most artists are happy to talk to you about the pieces.<br />
<br />
So, unless you want your home to look like everybody else's, search our original art in your local area, check out art festivals, check out co-ops. There is plenty out there!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Because I spent the last several days of 2011 cleaning up my studio, I was raring to go on the first day of 2012. I am going to document my process better in the upcoming year, and give each completed piece a "story" - meaning I'm going to keep up with the materials used in each piece.<br />
<br />
Today I started with a piece I have been working on and experimenting with. I had ALOT of texture on it, but wasn't pleased with it. So - I spent some time burning the texture off with a blowtorch, as well as gunpowder. As a result, I burned through the canvas a few times. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0jWmN2H1Nc/TwEAEjdAheI/AAAAAAAAAec/L8f-Rms2sTI/s1600/DSCN0011_0538.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0jWmN2H1Nc/TwEAEjdAheI/AAAAAAAAAec/L8f-Rms2sTI/s320/DSCN0011_0538.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The piece I'm experimenting with - with my new hand sander!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Below - you will see a sequence of pictures, beginning with the back of the piece to illustrate how much fire I used on it. I sanded it down and it lightened it up a little bit. I then added red to the areas on the painting that appeared to be bubbles as a result of the fire. I started to see a pattern emerged. I continued to play with it. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
While the piece isn't 100% finished, i think the progression is working nicely. It started out today very dark, and actually it was looking a little burnt because I was overzealous with the fire! A little sanding, finding patterns in the texture to emphasize, spraying alcohol back into it to dilute the paint has made a big difference. I would welcome any suggestions on how to proceed!</div>

I don't know if it is a Southern Old Wives tale, but my mother always told me growing up that what you do on New Years Day, you will do all year long. I have taken this statement literally for most of my adult life. In fact, I have to admit, it is a superstition I can't seem to shake. In fact, several years ago I spent the entire day on New Year's watching 12 hours of Law and Order. In looking back, this was the beginning of what became the most unproductive year of my life!!!!!<br />
<br />
Because of this, I try to start the New Year off with my home organized and fairly clean. The laundry is always done and put away. This year I made an effort to extend that into my studio. I began with cleaning out my paper closet. Below you will see where it began and how it ended up. I have organized the paper by paper I have manipulated, and other paper by color. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I feel I made progress over the last couple of days and can begin the New Year organized and raring to do. Since I have the phrase "what you do on New Year's Day, you will do the rest of the year" so ingrained in me, I will make a point of doing my favorite things on New Years Day, as well as healthy things. I will exercise, pay attention to what I eat, and I will paint!!!!!!<br /><div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pN3m17nCNrY/Tu56PQ8ij0I/AAAAAAAAAcA/ct7zoE4IkcM/s1600/6+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pN3m17nCNrY/Tu56PQ8ij0I/AAAAAAAAAcA/ct7zoE4IkcM/s320/6+copy.jpg" width="152" /></a></div>
<br />
After reading a blog by social media expert and author<a href="http://www.marismith.com/meet-mari"> Mari Smith</a> about selecting one word that will be your overall theme and guide for the year (you can read the blog <a href="http://www.marismith.com/2012-one-word-theme-growth/">here</a>). I have chosen the word FOCUS. One of the definitions of focus is to concentrate vision or energy. That is my plan for 2012 - to concentrate my vision and energy on moving ahead in my art career.<br />
<br />
I believe many creative types suffer a little from ADHD and I'm not immune to it. In looking back over the past year, I must admit when I have a deadline, I am able to focus. But, without a deadline I tend to get distracted and go in several directions. I previously wrote a blog about setting goals for 2012 which I published on this blog on November 13th. One of my goals is to blog regularly, so I started a file today to begin collecting ideas for upcoming blogs. Also - I need to get organized, in my studio, my office, my closet, all facets of my life! So - today I cleaned up my home office and organized my finances. Last week I organized my closet.<br />
<br />
I guess it is that time of year. My mother always told me that what you do on New Year's Day, you will do for the rest of the year. Case in point - several years ago I woke up early on New Year's Day and moved to the couch and turned on the TV. I lay there all day long and watched 12 hours of Law and Order - never getting dressed. Well, that turned out to be probably the most unproductive year of my life! Since then, I have always made it a point to feel pretty organized on New Years Day, have my bills paid, laundry done and put up!, refrigerator cleaned out. You get the idea!<br />
<br />
That leaves me time on New Year's Day to concentrate on what I want to do for the remainder of the year. I will paint, read, exercise, eat healthy. <br />
<br />
I also plan on spending the remaining two weeks of the year organizing my office for my day job - to make me more efficient.<br />
<br />
In doing these things, I will be able to FOCUS on pushing my art forward, working on my online presence and learning more about social media!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pcpfwEwiuAM/TsALtBJ33TI/AAAAAAAAAbo/4i85XbdR_x8/s1600/atlanta+1970jpg+copy+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pcpfwEwiuAM/TsALtBJ33TI/AAAAAAAAAbo/4i85XbdR_x8/s320/atlanta+1970jpg+copy+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am part of a critique group called<a href="http://shadowlineartist.blogspot.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;"> Shadowline Artist Group</span></a> which meets every month or so. We have decided to incorporate a "salon" type element to the group and share both long and short term goals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of our members, Donna Orti, did a little research on goals which are listed below. I found these thoughts so simple and straightforward, I feel they border on being brilliant! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. In order for a goal to be effective, it must effect change.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
2. Realistic goals are beyond your grasp but within your reach. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
3. Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
4. and my favorite - A goal without a deadline is a wish!</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
With these thoughts fresh in our minds, we went around the room and discussed our goals. The goals were as varied as finishing a series, finding a regional gallery to developing a website. There was talk about simplfying, finding focus, and organizing.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pn8lU1kts9E/TsAOY1oFj2I/AAAAAAAAAbw/aTsW2L6aC9U/s1600/music+of+the+world+25x21-a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pn8lU1kts9E/TsAOY1oFj2I/AAAAAAAAAbw/aTsW2L6aC9U/s320/music+of+the+world+25x21-a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
With hearing everybody's goals, I was inspired enough to put my initial goals on paper. So here goes!</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
I want to get in the habit of blogging. I haven't been blogging regularly, in fact, I had to stop and think about what my password was for my blog today!!!!! I don't want to just write about my work, but I want to write about the books I've read and the movies/documentaries I've seen that are relevant to my artwork.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
I need to organize my collage material - and I want that finished by the end of Thanksgiving weekend. I will be off work for 5 full days over Thanksgiving - and I don't have alot of commitments. So - I'm looking forward to a very productive long weekend to get myself organized.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
I also want to send out my electronic newsletter within the next 2 weeks. I haven't sent one since the summer - and it is time I send another one out. My last show of the year will be the first weekend of December, so I want to get it out prior to then.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
Over the longterm - I want to work on my online presence and expand my mailing list.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
I plan on experimenting more and working on a new series. I'm toying with an idea about destruction and beauty - - - going to work on making this more than a vague idea in my head!</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
Because I am in two galleries in town, as well as a shop in Vinings I have decided to get away from festivals. After much soul searching, I have decided Atlanta is just too "festival crazy" - there are weekends where there are as many as four or five festivals. The market is just too deluted. So - I'm going to choose my venues more carefully. I feel I am at a point in my art-career where the company I keep is important. I no longer want to show my work at events that have buy/sell or substandard work.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
In the other aspects of my life, I want to get on a strict budget. I want to eat healthier and work out more. I want to de-clutter my life, my homes, my wardrobe and my head!!!! </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica;">
So - here's to my goals. I will refine these by the end of the year and have a good list of goals that I am going to hold myself accountable too!</div>

Come out to Piedmont Park next weekend, September 17 and 18! I will be doing inter-active collage demonstrations throughout both days as part of <a href="http://www.atlantaartsfestival.com/creationStation.php">Creation Station</a>. I will help with people to do a small 5x7 collage they can take with them as long as supplies last. To make it simple, I have chosen four "suggested designs" and am putting together the materials for these.<br />
<br />
The first design is a dress - and while anybody can put together any type of dress they want, I am using the following as an example.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VsAzEc9EMNc/Tm1Br1yVGaI/AAAAAAAAAas/OyA3nMmi5Yk/s1600/collage+dressjpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VsAzEc9EMNc/Tm1Br1yVGaI/AAAAAAAAAas/OyA3nMmi5Yk/s320/collage+dressjpg" width="202" /></a></div>
<br />
I have included several types of paper, as well as dress patterns, paper from a player piano roll, a french book amd a few other things. If this is a design that is chosen, this dress particular dress is just a suggestion. Any type of dress can be done. Embellishments can be added with thread, stamps or colored pencil.<br />
<br />
The second design I am including is a musical piece with collage put on top of a piece of music. Below is an example using an old recital piece of mine!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCXpyiztKqw/Tm1CoJmG4UI/AAAAAAAAAaw/zTyLZQAd4bo/s1600/Collage_VM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oCXpyiztKqw/Tm1CoJmG4UI/AAAAAAAAAaw/zTyLZQAd4bo/s1600/Collage_VM.jpg" /></a></div>
I will help people with a simpler design of this, and I have been busy busy punching out different butterflies and birds for this. I will make copies of the actual music, as well as adding a piece of music called "Yellow Bird" and one called "Dragonfly". I will bring a stamp of a butterfly to use as embellishment.<br />
<br />
The third design is much smaller. I did a series several years ago using Tarot cards as the base. See below for an example.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wV7JJmcxHN4/Tm1EX3vDFzI/AAAAAAAAAa0/RiIgpOXuHLo/s1600/tarat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wV7JJmcxHN4/Tm1EX3vDFzI/AAAAAAAAAa0/RiIgpOXuHLo/s320/tarat.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am bring a regular pack of playing cards that can be collaged on. I will bring some sand paper because I like to rough up the surface a bit, as well as some sequins, thread, stamps, envelopes to name a few things I used on these. I also liked melting crayons on these! I am bringing a stack of magazines too, so images can be found in them also. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fourth design is an abstract piece, using primarily white and neutral pieces of rice paper. A sample is below:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P_TClSKscyM/Tm1Fk26Fv0I/AAAAAAAAAa4/04DvXVnqccM/s1600/mom028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P_TClSKscyM/Tm1Fk26Fv0I/AAAAAAAAAa4/04DvXVnqccM/s320/mom028.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will also demonstrate dying paper, using Nev'r Dull on magazine pages, and layering paintings and using a blow torch to work with the layers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, come on out - and take home a collage that you have made!!!!!</div>
